Wanda Lou “Keng” Mitchell

Wanda Lou Mitchell, 87, of Duncan, passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2017, at Country Club Care Nursing Center. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at Virginia Avenue Baptist Church in Anadarko, Oklahoma, with Rev. Donnie Edmondson, Rev. Monte Moran and Rev. Roger Bennett officiating. Interment followed at South Burns Cemetery in Dill City, Oklahoma at 3:00 p.m., and arrangements have been entrusted to the family care of Carter-Smart Funeral Home. The family received friends for visitation from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Monday evening, at the Carter-Smart Funeral Home. Wanda was born in Roscoe, Texas, April 16, 1929, to Fred William and Gladys Lucille “Cheves” Keng. They came to Dill City, Oklahoma, when she was the age of five. She graduated from Dill City High School in May, 1947. Wanda married Edward Dean Mitchell on January 11, 1947, at Cordell, Oklahoma. Edward passed away on March 21, 1999; her father, Fred William Keng passed away in 1975; and a son, Russell Alan Mitchell passed away on March 11, 2002. She lived in Cordell and the Clinton area until 1960, when she moved to Vernon, Texas; Wanda moved back to Clinton, in 1965; and then to Anadarko in 1966. She went to work for the Anadarko Public School System in the latter part of 1968. Wanda worked in the school cafeteria at the junior high school until 1978, then worked in the East Grade School cafeteria in 1978, until 1980. She went to work at Western Farmers Electric Company in October, 1980, as a custodian and retired in April of 1991. Wanda worked three years at H&R Block as a receptionist during tax season, then went camping and fishing until 1999. In January, 2004, she entered the Foster Grandparent Program at East Grade School, working with children which she dearly loved. Wanda was a member of Town and Country Home Demonstration Club, and a member of the Virginia Avenue Baptist Church for many years. She is survived by three sons and their wives, Dan and Susan Mitchell of Duncan, Oklahoma, Ronny and Linda Mitchell of Moore, Oklahoma, and Gary and Nancy Mitchell of Lake- Of-The-Ozarks, Missouri; three sisters, Claire Maddux of Tampa, Florida, Minnie Cole and her husband, Ray of Sentinel, Oklahoma, and Ruby Nickels of Moore, Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. Wanda loved her children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, and she loved her church and her church family dearly. Pallbearers were Wesley Mitchell, Kevin Laminack, Stevie Myers, Joe Roberts, Mike Crouch, and Shannon Beach. Honorary pallbearers will be Andy Bound, Zack Knowles, Travis Ingram, John Mayes, and Lee Allison. Memorials may be sent to Virginia Avenue Baptist Church, P.O. Box 486, Anadarko, Oklahoma 73005.
