Zettie was raised east of Thomas and attended Thomas schools, graduating in 1954. She received a Bachelor’s of Education from Southwestern State College in Weatherford, Oklahoma, and a Master’s of Education from the University of Oklahoma. Zettie started teaching in Cordell in 1970, where she taught Home Economics and Math and retired after 25 years of teaching in 1995. She positively impacted so many young lives with her dedication to teaching and is still very fondly remembered by so many. Beyond retirement, she continued to help others by teaching GED classes at night, as well as, teaching at the vo-tech in Burns Flat for several years. Zettie loved the farm and she really loved taking care of her cattle. She drove a tractor, took care of the cattle, and traveled from Texas to North Dakota, on wheat harvest. Zettie wasn’t only a great help during wheat harvest, she also made time to cook, drive a semi, and oversee the daily operations of the family. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, and most of all being around family and friends. Zettie was preceded in death by her parents, Gerhardt “Dutch” and Emma (Calkins) Lapel; and she lost the love of her life, Dale Jones on March 1, 2017.
