
Charles Chason, 76 year old Woodward County resident, died Wednesday, August 1, 2018 in Oklahoma City. A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 9, 2018 in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Jim Steenbergen officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the United States Air Force. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Charles Vassar Chason was born on December 26, 1940 in Jacksonville, Florida to William Vassar and Helen Elizabeth (Gross) Chason. Charles grew up in Jacksonville, Florida and graduated from Jacksonville High School. He was active in 4-H, showing dairy cattle and was on the high school swim team. He attended the University of Florida before joining the United States Air Force in 1959. He was honorably discharged in 1963. He was united in marriage to Madeline Lemasters Perkey in Dill City, Oklahoma on June 15, 1963. Charles went back to college at Oklahoma State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1970. He went to work for N&S Ranch as Ranch Manager until they moved to Cushing where he worked as a rancher. In 1973, the family moved to Ft. Supply and Charles became the Plant Industry Inspector for the Oklahoma State Department from 1973 until his retirement in 1997. After his retirement, Charles continued to work on developing a hybrid rye grass with the USDA and working with Foundation Quarter Horses. Charles enjoyed hunting, fishing, water sports, and horticulture, but most of all he loved spending time with his family. He was an active supporter of Woodward County 4-H with his focus on the Horse Club, the North Canadian River Rough Riders. He is survived by one son, Rex Perkey and wife Becky of Collinsville, Oklahoma; one daughter, Elwina Chason of Franklin, Tennessee; grandchildren: Stephanie Dobbs of Collinsville, Brandy Boatman and husband Jeramiah Boatman of Oolagah, Oklahoma, Jed Perkey of Collinsville, Brad Raby and wife Sarah of Nashville, Tennessee; great-grandchildren, Brittany Dobbs, Dylan Dobbs, Avery Perkey, Caden Perkey, Miracle Boatman, and Maddy Boatman; brothers and sisters: Joyce Graham and husband Bill of Tallahassee, Florida, Robert Chason and wife Sallee of Live Oak, Florida, Chester Chason and wife Sharon of Bell, Florida, Christine Straughn of West Palm Beach, Florida, Virginia Gilliland and husband Bill of Okeechobee, Florida, Helen Chason of Okeechobee, Florida, Sylvia Chason of Tampa, Florida; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Madeline on July 30, 2013, siblings, Laura Daniels, Rawley Chason, and Mary Chason.
