Elmer Lee Johnson was born on May 19, 1948 in Mooreland, Oklahoma to Ernest and Mildred Johnson. Elmer grew up in Vici, Oklahoma where he attended and graduated high school. While attending school he worked on Johnson Farms alongside his father. He absolutely loved being in a combine and praying with his dad before and after each harvest. During and after high school, he apprenticed for Shaw Funeral Home, and he would go on to proudly served in the Army Reserves.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in Funeral Service at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Oklahoma and later in Elementary Education from the University of Southwestern Oklahoma in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
Elmer was a public-school teacher for Elk City, Oklahoma for 23 years. He taught 6th grade science and was mostly known as Dr. J, but some remembered him as the rocket man. Elmer was proud to teach GED classes in his free time. After retiring from teaching, he drove frack tanks for TLR and distribution trucks for Hobby Lobby.
Elmer loved to be at church to sing and worship.
He loved to whistle, visit, and share stories. He was known to tease, have fun with people, and give everyone nicknames.
Elmer passed from this life on November 30, 2020 in Cordell, Oklahoma.
Elmer is preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Mildred Johnson.
Elmer is survived by his children, son Chris Johnson and wife Cathy of Cordell, Oklahoma, son Sean M. Johnson of Norman, Oklahoma, daughter Lori A. Johnson of Norman; grandchildren Madison L. Johnson and Parker L. Johnson; sisters Shirley Klein and husband Larry of Yukon, Oklahoma, and Pamela Down of Joplin, Missouri.
Private graveside services were conducted on Saturday, December 5, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Sunnyside Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Gideons Bible in care of Shaw Funeral Home, P.O. Box 276, Vici, OK 73859.
