Vina Olive (McEntire) Sammons was born in Canute, Oklahoma, October 4, 1924, to Paul Preston McEntire and Marie Lottie ( Prickett ) McEntire. She graduated from Canute High School in 1942. Vina married Dr. Joe Roy Sammons in June, 1943. She worked at Clinton/Sherman Air Force Base before she and J.R. moved to Ada, Oklahoma, where their daughter was born. After a brief return to Elk City, they moved to Oklahoma City. Vina worked as a Beauty Consultant and then as a waitress before their son was born. In the mid 1960's they moved to Norman to manage both of the NuWay Laundries there. J.R. became a pastor and they served together as a dynamic couple in serving God for over 40 years in churches in Oklahoma and Nevada. Vina was certified in the Laubach Literacy Course and taught many adults to read, speak, and understand English. She was also trained by the Billy Graham School of Evangelism along with J.R. One special ministry was that their front door was always open. So many people found food, a friend, a bed, a place to rest, encouragement, forgiveness, love, support, a car, or whatever they needed at the Sammons home. Vina was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Dr. J. R. Sammons; parents, Paul and Lottie McEntire; sisters, Edna Ladwig and Rubye Austin Vehon; and brothers, Elbert Mc Entire and Calvin McEntire. She is survived by daughter, Rhonda Russell; son, Steven Sammons; grandsons Sammy Sammons and Christopher Russell; sisters, Mamie Randall and Lela Stavros; brother, Doyle Mc Entire; and numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Burial was held Saturday, May 21, 2016, at Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Whinery-Savage Funeral Service. Condolences can be online at www.whineryfs.com
